Is It Safe to Enter Personal Information on a Website?

Published Ocak 8, 2025

Every day we're asked to enter our name, email, address, phone number or payment details into websites. But not all websites are trustworthy. Here's a practical checklist to follow before submitting any personal information online.

Quick answer: Before entering personal information, verify HTTPS is active, the domain looks correct, a privacy policy exists and the site has a credible reputation. For payments, only use sites with trusted payment processors.

The Pre-Submission Checklist

Run through these checks before submitting any form that collects personal data:

✅ Check 1: HTTPS is Active

Look for https:// at the start of the URL and a padlock icon. If you see "Not secure" in Chrome, do not submit any data. Use our SSL Checker to verify the certificate.

✅ Check 2: Verify the Domain Name

Read the domain carefully. Make sure you're on the legitimate website and not a lookalike. Check the domain in the address bar — not just the logo on the page.

✅ Check 3: Privacy Policy Exists

Any website collecting personal data should have a privacy policy explaining what data is collected, how it is used and how you can request deletion. No privacy policy = don't submit your data.

✅ Check 4: The Website Has a Real Reputation

Search for the website name online. Look for genuine reviews on Trustpilot, Google or industry forums. A domain registered last week with no online presence should not be trusted with your data.

✅ Check 5: The Form Is Appropriate

A contact form asking for your name and email is normal. A form asking for your social security number, passport number or full date of birth on a site you've never heard of is not. Only provide what's necessary.

✅ Check 6: Payment Pages Use Trusted Processors

For financial transactions, look for recognisable payment logos — Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, Stripe, Apple Pay. If a site only accepts bank transfer or crypto, this is a significant risk.

What to Do If You've Already Submitted Data to a Suspicious Site

  1. Change your password immediately if you submitted login credentials.
  2. Contact your bank if you entered card details — they can block the card and monitor for fraud.
  3. Monitor your email and accounts for unusual activity.
